Kaomoji for Discord

Most kaomoji paste into Discord just fine. Faces with a backslash, asterisk, underscore, tilde, backtick, bar or > can be changed by Discord’s formatting, so this page copies those in a Discord-safe form.

58 faces. Tap a card to copy, ♡ to save. Faces marked “may not show on older devices” use rarer symbols.

The short answer

Tap a face below and paste it into your Discord message. If the face contains a symbol that Discord might format, the card says “Discord-safe copy” and the copy already has the fix built in. A Copy plain button appears for a few seconds if you want the original.

Why some faces break on Discord

Discord uses Markdown, a set of symbols that format your text. Many kaomoji use those same symbols, so Discord may change them:

A lone symbol usually stays as typed. Trouble starts when the same symbol appears twice and Discord pairs them. In (*^▽^*)ノシ the two asterisks turn the middle of the face into italic text and disappear.

How Discord-safe copy fixes it

It puts a backslash in front of each of these characters: \ * _ ~ ` | and >. Discord reads a backslash as “show the next symbol as plain text”, so the face appears as written. Two examples of what gets copied:

Faces without those characters, such as (づ˘ω˘)づ, are copied unchanged. The copy escapes every one of the seven characters, even where Discord would not have changed anything. You can also add the backslashes by hand, or use Discord’s /shrug, /tableflip and /unflip commands.

The backslashes are for places where Discord applies Markdown, such as chat messages and the About Me section. Where it does not, they would show as extra characters, so use Copy plain there.

Kaomoji in your Discord profile

To write the name itself in fancy letters, try the Discord font generator on cutefonts.art. It measures each style against the display name limit, so you can see what room is left for a short face.

Every face on this page passed our display check on Windows system fonts. Phones are not measured yet, so very rare symbols can still show as boxes on some devices.

Questions

What is the Discord-safe copy?

It is the same face with a backslash added before any of the characters Discord uses for formatting. Discord hides the backslash and shows the face as written.

Do I need it for every kaomoji?

No. Only faces that contain a backslash, asterisk, underscore, tilde, backtick, bar or > can change. The cards on this page that need it say so.

Why does my kaomoji look different on Discord?

Discord reads symbols like *, _, ~~, || and \ as formatting. Use the Discord-safe copy, which adds backslashes so they show as typed.

How do I send the shrug on Discord without losing an arm?

Tap the shrug on this page, which copies the Discord-safe version. You can also type /shrug, or add extra backslashes before the arm and underscores yourself.

Can I put a kaomoji in my Discord username?

No. Usernames only allow lowercase letters, numbers, underscores and periods. Put the face in your display name instead.

How long can a Discord display name be?

Up to 32 characters, so choose a short face.
